June 28, 2008 - The first week of games are in the books!!  The long awaited New York Ave. Classic has finally started.  This year we started with a new court and some new teams.  The 8th annual tournament consists of 32 Teams in 4 divisions.
The first day is always busy trying to get teams registered and handing out Jerseys.  One of the new teams is the Maryland Suns, who entered teams in our Junior Division, 16-Under, and Unlimited.  Tyler House has teams this year in Junior , 16-Under, and 19-Under divisions.  Not all teams were scheduled to play today, but there was still plenty of action.

13-Under Division (Juniors)
The first 13-Under game placed two neighborhood teams Colors and Tyler House head to head.  Colors was no match for Tyler House as they were crushed in this first match up.  Many of the players on the Colors team never played together and had to get used to each others style, so they suffered.  They will get better as the summer goes on and they will finish strong.

Tyler House was playing like a well oiled machine and easily rolled over their neighborhood rival.  After team cancellation by DC Ballers, Tyler House filled in and played the new team, The Maryland Suns.  This game was the most exciting game of the day.  The teams proved to be equally matched and fought for every basket and possession.  The smothering defense from both teams made this a low scoring game, but it was very intense.  Both sidelines had heated moments where the coaches were trying to pump up the players  to get aggressive and play smart for the win.  This game came down to the last few seconds.  In the end, The Suns were able to win by one pint.

16-Under Division
The first game of the year in this division was no disappointment.  The MD  Suns  were placed against Tru Ballerz.  The Suns got off to a quick start and played an exciting style of ball that featured high flying dunks and ally-oops.  They quickly pulled away from Tru Ballerz with a 20 point lead.  Tru Ballerz proved that they were not discouraged by the Suns fast play and started to pull themselves together.  In the second half, they played strong defense and began to force many turnovers.  The Suns team was shocked and began to commit careless fouls and tuned the ball over many times.  On one play, after a Suns player turned the ball over a few times by carrying, a teammate yelled from the bench “This is streetball, but its’s not all the way street ball!”.    Tru Ballerz began to make a very competitive game out of this contest but ran out of time in the end.  If they played like that in the first half, they could have pulled this one out.  Kudos to the Suns team for holding it together in the end and pulling out the win.

The second game put Tyler House against 1st-N-O.  This game started off very entertaining, but the rain caused this one to be postponed with a little bit less than 7 minutes in the first half.  Stay tuned, this one is not over and will be continued next week.

19-Under Division
The 19-Under division was no disappointment.  This year we have the strongest 19-Under teams that we ever had.  BallaHolics came in and absolutely blew DC Finest out of the water.  Their strong play and hard dunks was no match for the DC Finest team.  They were trying to be the first team this year to reach 100 points.  Although this game was a blowout, it was very entertaining.

After a late team cancellation by 3rd & P who did not have all of their players ready, BallaHolics agreed to play the newly formed Tyler House Team that consisted of many players from last years Champions 16-Under Colors Team .  This was going to be a game to be remembered.  The players of the Tyler House team proved why they were last years champions by racing to a 11-2 run to start the game.  Unfortunately this one would have to wait.  The rain came down and postponed this game with a little over 11 minutes left in the first half.    This one will be continued next week.  DON’T MISS IT!!
