The day was hot and humid, but that didn’t stop anyone. This week the tournament took started to take shape. Although new teams were still coming in, the ball kept bouncing. This week of July 19th proved to show us a glimpse of some strong playoff matchups.
13-UNDER DIVISION
This division had to be revamped from the previous weeks. Some teams were too small and had to merge with other teams to make the division more competitive. Also two new teams (Up-Top & Pro City) came in this week to round out the division. The first game of the day featured the one of the new teams, Pro City (from Kennedy Rec Center) vs TylerHouse. Pro City (yellow) wasn’t quite ready for the more experienced TylerHouse (gray) team. You can chalk it up to just trying to get used to the tournament, but the more experienced Tyler House team did not hold back as they ran up and down the court to beat the Pro City team 26-11. The second game put another new team, Up-Top (navy) against the revamped DC Ballerz (Royal). DC Ballerz is a very small team, but they actually made a decent game of this one. They fought all the way to the end, but came up short by two points as the UpTop team beat them 23-21. The final 13-Under game put Pro City against the other top team in this division, the MD Suns. This one wasn’t much of a contest either as the Suns experience and skill was too much for the Pro City team. The final score was 37-18.
16-UNDER DIVISION
This division keeps producing some exciting games each week. This week was no exception. Without question, the most exciting game of the day was between last year’s champs, Colors and the MD Suns. This game commanded the most attention of the day. Players on both sides brought out their best performance and left it all on the court. Both teams produced some plays that made the crowd ooh an ahh. Since this one was so competitive, tempers flared from players and coaches. Ref Valentine quickly established control of the game as he called both coaches to center court during the game for a conference to calm things down. At one point the coach of the Suns was getting on her center and telling him that no matter what defense they play, the other team was running through them!! Coach Moose was getting on his players too for making careless mistakes and allowing easy baskets. One of the Colors players had to sit down for a while to calm his temper after getting into it with the refs. In the end, this one went down in the books as a Colors win, but we all know this one is not over. This was only the first meeting between these two. We are sure to see them again in the Playoffs. STAY TUNED!!

This game was exciting considering that Colors had an earlier game that day against True Ballerz in the scorching heat. This one featured a lot of spectacular plays from the colors team. On one play DT from Colors was on a fast break with Howie and received a pass off the backboard to slam it in, but…. HE MISSED! It didn’t matter as the Colors team was all over this one from beginning to end. Colors win 46-39.
The last 16&U game of the day included a competitive one between Kenilworth and 1st & O. These two teams have been up and down throughout this tournament and actually had the same records going into this game. The game was up and down until the last few minutes when 1st & O started to pull away. They won this one 39-31.
19 & UNDER DIVISION
Three games topped off this division today. The most competitive one was between Southside Ballerz and Street Kings. Street kings has a very up and down team that is competitive when they are at full strength. They are still the smallest team in this division. Southside Ballerz took advantage of the size difference and easily won this one by 9 points (45-34).
The next game was a strong Tylerhouse team against a struggling DC Finest Team. Tylerhouse is the most optimistic team that we have in this tournament. They come out to compete every game and whether or not they win or lose, they are still upbeat. Well this week they had a reason to be upbeat because they easily handled the DC finest team and held them to only 23 pints for the game. Tylerhouse wins this one in a blowout 38-23.
There was another blowout in this division this week as The undefeated BallaHolics team went up against the undermanned Ft. Stanton Team. Fort Stanton arrived to this game late, and could never quite get it together. Once the game got underway, The more athletic Ballaholics team went to work and put the Ft. Stanton team away very quickly. They won this game by 18 points.
UNLIMITED DIVISION
The Unlimited division only featured one game today. Next to the 16U Colors vs Suns game, this was probably the most exciting. Both of these teams are strong and undefeated, so this clash was expected to be a good one. Green Light jumped out front, but We R One stayed in there and the score went back and forth all the way to the final minute. We R One finally outlasted Green light and narrowly won by 3 points. These long time favorites will be in the thick of things when the playoffs begin. Look out for this one.
